TOWN OF LAKE COWICHAN *Public Works – Utility Position* The Town of Lake Cowichan has an immediate opening for a full-time position in the Public Works Department to fill a vacancy. Reporting to the Public Works Superintendent, the Utility Systems Operator will be mainly responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town’s water treatment plant and water distribution systems, and wastewater treatment systems and performing other duties as directed. Operational and maintenance duties would include ensuring that the Town’s operational permit requirements are met or exceeded. *Location:* Lake Cowichan is a vibrant and growing community that is strategically located at the eastern end of Cowichan Lake, headwaters of the world-famous Cowichan River. The Town, with its close proximity to Duncan, Victoria, and Nanaimo, is the gateway to some of the most spectacular camping, hiking, and fishing venues available on Vancouver Island. It also boasts a temperate climate, which is ideal for outdoor activities year-round. Lake Cowichan BC, Vancouver Islands also offers a unique combination of breathtaking natural scenery and urban living. *Qualifications* Applicants must: 1. Be capable of operating and maintaining all pumps, motors, electric equipment; flow measuring devices, meters, regulating equipment and structures including utility treatment facilities and any other related facilities; 2. Be proficient with the operation of the water treatment and wastewater facilities; 3. Operate and troubleshoot chemical feed systems; 4. Conduct water and sewage outflow quality tests in accordance with Island Health or Ministry of Environment requirements; 5. Operate treatment facility processes through SCADA (off-site and on-site); 6. Perform laboratory tests for quality control purposes; 7. Have the ability to interpret and evaluate data relevant to the water and sewer utility operations; 8. Monitor water/sewer treatment plant operations through sample testing and adjusting flows and chemical additions; and 9. Be able to organize and execute work plans that include any duty assigned to the position; and 10. Be able to respond to emergency situations promptly. Two or more years of municipal experience in municipal waterworks and sewer systems complemented with a minimum of EOCP Level III in water treatment. EOCP Level designations in one or more certificates in water distribution and wastewater are additional pre-requisites. An EOCP Level ll for water treatment will receive consideration so long as the applicant is working towards a Level lll designation. Possession of a BC Class 5 driver’s license is required. This is a United Steelworkers' bargaining unit position and offers a wage of $34.53 with excellent benefits. Employees holding water treatment, water distribution and wastewater certificates will receive an additional $0.60 per hour for each ticket level.
